The popularity of motorcycles has grown over the past couple of decades to enormous proportions. Motorcycles have become so popular that hundreds of thousands of people meet in Daytona Beach, Florida each year for one week to show off their motorcycles and attend rallies and races at the Daytona Bike Week. Daytona Bike Week took place in 2009 from February 27th to March 8th. The Daytona Bike Week, even though it is called a week, actually lasts for roughly 10 days. More than 500,000 people attend this event each year and come from all over the country to the state of Florida. Daytona Bike Week is considered to be the most popular biking event in the country and it competes with the Sturgis Rally, which is held in Sturgis, South Dakota.

Daytona Bike Week can get rowdy at times, which is understandable, since there are over 500,000 people in attendance. The majority of the bikers present during this event wear a black helmet, which is the most popular color helmet for bikers these days. Helmets are sold in other colors such as red, blue, and green but the black helmet seems to be the most popular color helmet on the market. The restaurants, shops, and hotels in Daytona Beach are packed with motorcycle enthusiasts for a wonderful 10 day stretch that lasts even longer for some people who hate to leave once the event is complete.

There are all kinds of showcases, races, and other events for motorcycle enthusiasts in attendance at the Daytona Bike Week to take part in during their stay in Daytona Beach, Florida. Races take place almost each day of the 10 day stretch and the races involve some professional bike racers but the majority of the races involve the people in attendance for the event. Daytona Bike Week was absent from Daytona Beach, Florida from 1942-1947 due to World War II. The event officially began on January 24, 1937 and was known as the Daytona 200. The late co-founder of NASCAR, William France Sr., was the main promoter of Daytona Bike Week until his death.

In the country, the city, and all parts in between, motorcycles are everywhere, and there are makes and models to fit every type of rider, from the Harley riding road warrior to the weekend sportbiker. Like any other group of enthusiasts, motorcyclists love to gather to compare bikes and share experiences of the open road. All across the U.S., every kind of event imaginable takes place annually.

Of all the motorcycle events in the U.S. today, the two most popular rallies are the bike weeks in Sturgis, South Dakota and Daytona, Florida. The events during Sturgis’ Bike Week draw motorcycle enthusiasts from accross the country and include custom bike exhibits and demo rides, as well as a replica of the Vietnam Memorial used to honor fallen military. Daytona’s Bike Week also draws a huge national crowd, and includes British and European bike shows, bikini contests, burnout competitions, road races, and concerts featuring local and national performers.

Other events held across the country often center on a cause, with the proceeds to benefit a charity. Some of these events include the Fallen Heroes Run in Sparks, Nevada, which honors fallen police officers, and the Live Ride for MDA in Anchorage, Alaska, which raises money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Many motorcyle events reflect a theme. Often, these themes reflect the location of the event, such as the Let’s Ride To Texas Pride Barbecue, in Adkins, Texas. Other themed events seem to have no relation to the place where they’re held. A prime example is the Luau Event in Sturgis, Michigan. (Not to be confused with Sturgis, South Dakota, where they likely have little interest in poi and grass skirts!)

Female bikers have become a large percentage of the riding population, and new events reflect the increase in interest among women. In Bonduel, Wisconsin, a group of women have organized an annual event called Women In Motion. Although this event is open to both male and female bikers, other events, such as the Women’s Only Garage Party in Charleston, South Carolina, are strictly for female riders.

Today’s motorcyclists are a diverse group, and the events held nationwide reflect the wide range of interests held by those who embrace the feel of the open road. If you’re a motorcycle enthusiast, you’re not alone–and there’s probably a rally, party, or bike night just a short ride down the road!
